COC certificate in Johannesburg

A Certificate of Compliance, usually called a COC, is the document a registered person issues after inspecting a permanent electrical installation. In a Johannesburg sale, the transferring attorney or the buyer often asks for one. An insurer may ask after a claim. The certificate is about the wiring, the board, the earthing, and the fixed circuits as they were on the day of the inspection. It is not a service plan for appliances.

Joburg Electrical does not inspect installations and does not issue certificates. Instant Match can notify Lekker Network electricians who take on COC work in the suburb you name. If they find defects, the honest outcome is a fail and a quote for repairs, not a certificate written over the top of a bridged breaker.

What often fails an inspection

Missing or tired earth-leakage protection, a distribution board with open live parts, socket outlets without earth where the code expects earth, and joints made with tape in a roof space are typical reasons an older Johannesburg house does not pass. A new inverter or generator that can back-feed the municipal supply is another. The electrician has to see it. A photo of the board helps them prepare, but it does not replace the visit.

Sectional-title units are inspected as the unit's installation. The body corporate's rising main is a different responsibility. Say whether you need the unit only, and whether a trustee has to open a cupboard or a meter room.

How to ask

Choose the certificate service, set Gauteng and your suburb, and write why you need it: sale, rental, or insurance. Add the suburb page if we wrote one for Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort, Midrand, or Soweto. Those notes are about the buildings there, not a second copy of this explanation.

Questions and answers

Can this website email me a COC?

No. Only a registered person who has inspected the installation can issue it. Sending a certificate without that inspection would be fraud, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Does a COC mean the house will never trip?

No. It records the condition found at the inspection. A later overload, a failed geyser element, or a nail through a cable is a new fault.

What if the electrician wants to do repairs first?

That is normal when the installation does not comply. You can accept the quote, get another view through a fresh request, or stop. The match itself was free.
