DB board repairs in Johannesburg
The DB, or distribution board, is the enclosure that holds the main switch, the earth leakage, and the breakers for lights, plugs, the stove, and the geyser. In many Johannesburg houses it sits in the garage, a passage, or a kitchen cupboard. If you smell burning there, treat it as a fault at the board: switch off if you can do that safely, and do not keep closing a breaker that opens at once.
A repair can be as small as a single faulty breaker or a earth leakage that tests dead. An upgrade is a different job when the board is full, the fuses are still rewirable wire, or there is no earth leakage at all. Nobody on this website can price that from a suburb name. The electrician needs the board cover off, with the supply made safe, before they know the cable sizes and the spare ways.
What to tell them
Say whether the board is in a house, a townhouse cupboard, or an estate meter room. Mention if an inverter or generator has already been added. A changeover that can energise the municipal lines is a safety problem, not a feature to hide. If only one circuit is dead, the fault-finding page may be the better label. If the metal box itself is hot, cracked, or buzzing, keep this label.
We did not publish a board page for every suburb. Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort, Midrand, and Soweto have notes because access and the age of the boards differ there. Everywhere else, use this guide and type the suburb on the form.
Questions and answers
Will you replace the board the same day?
We do not promise a day or a slot. A replacement also depends on parts and on whether the supply must be isolated. Ask the electrician who accepts the job.
Is a DB repair the same as a COC?
No. A repair fixes what was asked. A Certificate of Compliance is a separate inspection of the installation. You can need both, and you should say so in the brief.
Can I open the board myself?
Leave the cover on unless you are qualified to work inside it. Describe the symptoms instead. A photo of the closed board is enough to start the request.
